US Treasury sought public input on digital-asset illicit-finance risks in 2022

Archive note: This report concerns a consultation opened on 19 September 2022. The consultation is closed.

The US Department of the Treasury requested public comments on illicit-finance and national-security risks associated with digital assets. The request followed Executive Order 14067 and Treasury's action plan on digital-asset illicit finance. Comments were due by 3 November 2022.

The consultation was not a new law and did not itself prohibit cryptocurrency activity. It asked for evidence about risks including money laundering, cybercrime and terrorist financing, as well as possible gaps in existing controls.
