Australia announced crypto licensing and custody work in December 2022

Archive note: This article records an Australian government announcement made on 14 December 2022. The Australian government said it would develop a framework for licensing and regulating crypto service providers, with attention to custody and consumer safeguards. The announcement described planned policy work; it did not mean a complete new regime had already taken effect in 2023. Treasury later consulted on a digital-asset platform proposal from 16 October to 1 December 2023. Proposals, consultations and enacted law must be distinguished when assessing regulatory status. How G20 crypto-policy work advanced after 2022

Archive note: This article has been rewritten as a dated summary of international policy coordination. In 2023, the Financial Stability Board and International Monetary Fund published a synthesis paper and implementation roadmap for crypto-asset policy. The work brought together recommendations on financial stability, regulation, supervision and macroeconomic risks. These international recommendations were not self-executing domestic law. Each jurisdiction remained responsible for implementation. A 2024 FSB status report said progress had been made but implementation remained uneven, creating risks of regulatory arbitrage and offshore activity. From FTX indictment to conviction: the US case against Sam Bankman-Fried

Archive note: This article began as a December 2022 report about criminal allegations and was updated in August 2026 to record the later outcome. US prosecutors announced an indictment of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried on 13 December 2022. The charges included wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud, money laundering and campaign-finance conspiracy allegations. At that stage, the charges were allegations and he was presumed innocent. A federal jury later convicted Bankman-Fried in November 2023. On 28 March 2024, the US District Court for the Southern District of New York sentenced him to 25 years in prison. Primary sources: DOJ indictment announcement ; DOJ sentencing announcement . Binance.US offered zero-fee ETH trading from December 2022 to August 2023

Archive note: This article records a promotion that is no longer active. Binance.US announced zero-fee spot trading for ether pairs on 7 December 2022. The exchange later stated that zero-fee ETH pricing ended on 23 August 2023. The offer should therefore be understood only as a historical pricing promotion. Trading described as “zero fee” can still involve spreads, execution risk, withdrawal costs and exchange counterparty risk. A past promotion does not establish current fees or service availability. FCA officials told Parliament what they learned from the FTX collapse

Archive note: This article summarises UK parliamentary testimony given on 7 December 2022. Matthew Long of the Financial Conduct Authority told Parliament that FTX was not authorised by the FCA. He described risks created when issuance, trading, wholesale activity and custody were combined within one group and said lessons from the collapse would inform development of the UK regulatory regime. These statements were regulatory testimony and assessment, not a universal court finding about every crypto business. The evidence should be read in its December 2022 context. Celsius Earn-account ownership ruling: what the court decided

Archive note: The original December 2022 article previewed a pending decision. This version records the court's 4 January 2023 ruling. The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York ruled on ownership of assets in Celsius Earn accounts. The court relied on the applicable terms of use, including a transfer-of-title clause, in deciding that the assets became property of the bankruptcy estate. The decision was case-specific. It should not be generalised to every exchange, wallet or interest-bearing account: ownership and customer claims depend on contract terms, custody structure, jurisdiction and insolvency law.
