Thai SEC consulted on crypto deposit and lending services in 2022

Archive note: This article concerns a Thai SEC consultation announced on 15 September 2022.

Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission sought comments on principles that would prohibit regulated digital-asset businesses from providing or supporting deposit-taking and lending services that paid returns to customers. The proposal addressed activities such as using deposited assets for lending, investment or staking.

At the date of the announcement, this was a consultation rather than a final rule. The original headline overstated the legal position by describing the proposal as an immediate restriction.
