Australia announced crypto licensing and custody work in December 2022

Archive note: This article records an Australian government announcement made on 14 December 2022.

The Australian government said it would develop a framework for licensing and regulating crypto service providers, with attention to custody and consumer safeguards. The announcement described planned policy work; it did not mean a complete new regime had already taken effect in 2023.

Treasury later consulted on a digital-asset platform proposal from 16 October to 1 December 2023. Proposals, consultations and enacted law must be distinguished when assessing regulatory status.
